John Abel replaces Hank Stuart as the New Championship Coordinator of the Melges 24 class

The International Melges 24 Class Association (IM24CA) reported January 6th, 2016 that Hank Stuart (photo above) announced his retirement after ten years with the Melges 24 class.

Their news release states: “As a great and very valuable legacy for the class Hank has helped to improve the race management of the Melges 24 events both at the sea and ashore during all these years.” in addition to: “After the discussions IM24CA has decided to divide the job of the Championship Coordinator between two persons covering different hemispheres. The new Championship Coordinators will be John Abel from Victoria, BC, Canada for Western Hemisphere and Asia Pacific; and Benedek Fluck from Budapest, Hungary for Europe. Both of them will be introduced to you shortly.”  Full news release   

 

ISAF Appointment
Earlier in November, 2015, John Abel was appointed by The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) to the top level of Race Officals. the International Race Officer status (IRO). ISAF is the world governing body for the sport of sailing, officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).  Article in BC Sailing

Melges 24 Canadian Nationals
For the Kelowna Yacht Club‘s Melges 24 Canadian National Championship event June 24 – 26, 2016, John Abel will be the Principal Race Officer responsible for all on the water aspects of the event. He will oversee that the race course is setup in a standardized manner to ensure the fair competition for all involved. All countdowns and signals shall strictly be conducted adhering to internationally recognized standards. Races shall be sailed only when the PRO and his committee are confident thats these standards are met.
